研究内容

Broadly speaking, my research interests lie in the areas of translingualism (i.e. communication involving resources from different named languages and nonverbal affordances), English as a lingua franca, social interaction, language ideologies, and language learning/use. Reflecting these areas of interest, my research revolves around questions such as the following:

1) how do multilingual users of English communicate with each other despite the differences in grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and pragmatic conventions?;
2) what are the dominant language ideologies for today’s English language learners and how do these ideologies influence their language learning/use?;
3) what role does English language teaching play in (re)producing hegemonic ideologies such as native speakerism and linguistic imperialism;
4) how might we envision social interaction beyond a preoccupation with linguistic structure?
5) how might real-life communication differ from what is taught in formal education and how could we, as researchers and educators, bridge this gap?

I draw on qualitative approaches, including conversation analysis, membership categorization analysis, narrative inquiry, and critical discourse analysis, in addressing these questions.
